The Australian Government have designed the curent General Skilled Migration Program to attract people who have skills in particular occupations that are required in Australia . These occupations are listed on Australia 's Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

Australian Skilled Visa Basic Requirements
To qualify to live permanently in Australia under one of the General Skilled Migration visa categories you (or your partner) will need to meet all of the following basic requirements:
you must be under 45 years of age at the time you apply (unless you have been invited to apply for a General Skilled Migration visa)
your occupation must be listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
an organisation in Australia , known as the relevant assessing authority, must assess your skills as being suitable for this occupation
you must have a high level of English
you must have recent skilled work experience or have recently completed an Australian qualification as the result of two years full-time study in Australia.
Each subclass of visa has additional requirements that you must meet before your visa can be granted.

Australian Skilled Visa Subclasses
Skilled Independent Visa (Onshore & Offshore)
The applicant must satisfy the basic requirements, pass the points test of 120, have a skill on the skills occupation list and does not have family in Australia or chooses not to be sponsored by family in Australia.
Skilled - Sponsored Visa
The applicant must satisfy the basic requirements, pass the point's test of 100, have a skill on the skills occupation list and have an Australian relative willing to sponsor the applicant. The applicant must be related to the sponsor as either a parent, non-dependent child (a natural, adoptive or step-child), brother/sister (including adoptive or step-siblings), a niece/nephew (including adoptive or step-niece or step-nephew).
Skilled - Regional Sponsored Visa (Onshore & Offshore)
The applicant must satisfy the basic requirements, have a skill on the skills occupation list and have an Australian relative willing to sponsor. The applicant must be related to the sponsor as either a parent, non-dependent child (a natural, adoptive or step-child), brother/sister (including adoptive or step-siblings), a niece/nephew (including adoptive or step-niece or step-nephew), a first cousin or grandchild. The sponsor must live in a designated area of Australia at the time of application and continue to reside there at the time of decision. Or be sponsored by a State or Territory.
